What is CAPSOL?

The CAPSOL is an instrument to enhance student understanding and learning through the identification of student strengths.

The CAPSOL is an assessment program, which is used to assess a student's style of learning ranging from school age students through adult learners in corporate training or higher education. The recipients' preferences are determined by responding to 45 questions on an NCR form. The profile is easily and quickly scored by the recipient, resulting in an individual profile with prescriptions for the use of both instructor and learner.

The CAPSOL learning prescription is divided into high preferences and low preferences. The high preferences section provides for teaching to the student's style of learning. The low preferences section indicates areas in need of improvement.

HOW IS THE CAPSOL INVENTORY ADMINISTERED?

The CAPSOL styles of learning inventory is easily administered and scored. Approximately fifteen minutes of student time is generally required to complete the forty-five question inventory and to score the profile. In most cases teachers detach the second page, which contains the student profile, and suggested instructional prescriptions based on the profile results and place it in the student's file or portfolio for use in addressing the learning needs of the student. A student copy of prescription options, written in language that students can interpret, is also provided for the student's personal use in addressing his/her own instructional needs.

"Capsol has been a significant part of our school improvement program, particularly at the middle school level. It has been valuable in identifying student strengths, analyzing data for skill building, and has served as the centerpiece of our professional development program."

Additional Statements

"I have used the CAPSOL learning style inventory for over 15 years with approximately 2,000 graduate students (mostly teachers). Many of them introduced CAPSOL to their school systems. What I particularly like about this instrument is that the learner can do a self-assessment in a short period of time and that it is easy to score and interpret.

I and my graduate students have used CAPSOL with students of all ages from third grade to graduate school. I have also used it in inservice teacher-training programs with great success. I strongly recommend that
CAPSOL be part of the learning style inventory mix for use by schools and colleges.
